- A Resource About Advice for Parents on Dealing with a Drug Using Child

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Second only to the tragic waste that occurs when children get hooked on
- drugs is the anxiety and pain suffered by the parents who must deal with the
- problem. Without the knowledge gained through personal experience, parents
- are often frightened, frustrated and ineffective in a situation that requires
- the ultimate in interaction with the child. So the child goes improperly
- counseled, or worse yet, undirected and jumps from one drug abuse to another.
- The path often starts with the use of cocaine, and its highly addictive
- properties make casual users into ever more frequent users. And that leads to
- the need for funds to pay for the habit, which can lead to crime and trouble
- with the law.
- The first positive step to avert these tragedies is to provide parents
- with the basic information they need to stop the problem at its earliest
- stages. And the American Academy of Pediatrics has done just that with their
- new brochure "Cocaine: Your Child and Drugs". It is must reading for all
- parents, and it can be obtained with out cost by sending a stamped
- self-addressed business sized envelope to: American Academy of Pediatrics,
- Division of Publications, 141 Northwest Point Blvd., P.O. Box 927, Elk Grove
- Village, IL 60009-0927. Concerned grandparents or relatives of teenagers are
- also invited to request the publication.
